HYDERABAD: The Telangana government issued an order for inclusion of transgender or third gender option against sex column in birth, death and still birth reporting forms and certificates. But, did the officials goof up with use of the word for inclusion of people whose sex is other than male or female?

It remains unclear whether the option will include the word ‘Transgender’  or ‘Third Gender’, as contents in abstract of the Government Order and details of the order varied. “Inclusion of column of transgender/third gender in birth, death and still birth reporting forms and its certificates” read abstract of the GO issued on Monday.

However, details of the order read “Birth, death and still birth reporting forms add an option against column sex (enter Male/Female/Transgender)”.

LGBT activists said that one cannot determine whether a child is transgender soon after birth. They said sex can only be known after the birth and gender is about a person’s opinion about themselves.

When director of public health and family welfare department, Y Lalitha Kumari, was contacted to find which words would be included, she said she  can shed some light on it on Tuesday.

Superintendent of  Government Maternity Hospital, Dr G Pratibha, said that the birth, death and still birth reporting forms are filled after birth of a child and the details are sent to GHMC.
