HYDERABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed Telangana Assembly Speaker S Madhusudhana Chary to inform it within a week about the time he would require to “decide” on the pending disqualification petitions, relating to the Congress MLAs, who had defected to the ruling TRS.

The Court then posted the matter to November 8 for further hearing. The Apex Court was hearing a petition filed by Congress MLA SA Sampath kumar seeking directions to Speaker to look into the petitions filed by the Congress to disqualify its MLAs, who had earlier crossed over to the TRS, under the Anti-Defection Law. He alleged that the conduct of the defected MLAs is contrary to the spirit of the Constitution.

When the matter came up for hearing, the government counsel requested the court to grant some more time. The petitioner’s counsel pointed out that this was only a delay tactic.
