Don't give Hyderabad Lib Day a religious angle: Kodandaram

TJAC chairman terms Sept 17 as the day on which Hyd was integrated with the country and demands it to be observed as Merger Day

HYDERABAD: Cornering the state government, Telangana Joint Action (TJAC) chairman Prof M Kodandaram once again objected to the state government's proposals to create new districts.

Alleging that the reorganisation of new districts was not being done as per the wishes of the people, Kodandaram said that the government should refer to the Constitution while carving out the new districts. The professor was participating in a programme organised to celebrate Hyderabad Liberation Day on Saturday.

After hoisting the national flag at TJAC's headquarters, Kodandaram termed September 17, the day on which the erstwhile State of Hyderabad was integrated with the country, as Merger Day. He appealed to the people to not give a religious angle to the date. “September 17 is a sensitive issue and it should not be looked in a religious angle,” he felt. The State government should give a clarity and conduct Sept 17 officially, Kodanadaram added.

He said the TJAC would write to the state government to conduct the day as Merger Day.
