Two more women die after C-sections in government hospitals

Two more pregnant women, who underwent Caesarean sections at government hospitals here,  died on Saturday taking the maternal mortality death toll to 12 this year.

HYDERABAD:  Two more pregnant women, who underwent Caesarean sections at government hospitals here,  died on Saturday taking the maternal mortality death toll to 12 this year.  

In the latest incident Ratnamala, from Mahbubnagar, who was admitted to Maternity Hospital in Petlaburz here,  underwent a Caesarean surgery on Saturday morning, since two of her earlier deliveries were also C-sections. A few hours later her vitals dropped and she died at around 3.30 p.m.

 In another case a 22-year-old woman Archana,  who suffered from health complication after her delivery at Government Maternity Hospital in Sultan Bazaar on Thursday, died on Saturday morning. Doctors claimed that Archana left the hospital against medical advise (LAMA) after the complication.

The situation is similar to the one that happened at Niloufer Hospital where five maternal deaths were reported in the first week of February.


Similarly four women suffered from heavy bleeding after delivery on Thursday at Government Maternity Hospital in Sultan Bazaar. Two women died on the same day. Another woman is undergoing treatment at Osmania Government Hospital, and the fourth woman - Archana - left OGH, got admitted to a private hospital in the city and died on Saturday evening.

After the deaths, caesarean surgeries at Maternity Hospital in Sultan Bazar were put on hold and pregnant woman categorised as high-risk cases were directed to Niloufer Hospital in Red Hills. 

Doctors there said that swab samples collected from bedsheets, floor, medical devices in operation theatres of the maternity hospital, tested negative for infection. Based on a complaint from Ratnamala’s family members a case has been registered at the Charminar PS under IPC Section 304 (a) against the duty doctors for causing death by negligence.
