HYDERABAD: Government officials who are distressed over maternal deaths in the state are going to take expert views and draw knowledge of retired gynaecologists to understand the issue.

A session would be convened on Thursday between the gynaecologists who retired after serving at government hospitals and superintendents of maternity hospitals. Serving gynaecologists, anesthetists would be part of the half-a-day session too.

The decision was taken at a meeting convened on Monday. In last four days, at least five maternal deaths were reported in the state. The issue has become critical as five women who underwent caesarean surgery at Niloufer Hospital from Jan 28 to Feb 4, died. The recent deaths brought criticism for government hospitals and Health and Family Welfare Department.

Officials in the Health department are trying to revive old practices of checking maternal deaths such as organising Maternal Mortality Rate meetings whenever such deaths are recorded. At the meetings, case sheets of deceased women should be read out.
