Maternal deaths in Telangana government hospitals: Retired doctors weigh in

Gynaecologists ask Health department officals to ensure a central sterilization department in all hospitals

HYDERABAD: A round-table session was attended by doctors and officials from the State Health and Family Department at Niloufer Hospital on Thursday afternoon.

This comes in the backdrop of the department facing intense criticism for maternal deaths in government hospitals in Telangana. Concerns have been voiced about lack of enough doctors, nurses and other health staff at hospitals.

The session was attended by retired gynaecologists who worked at government hospitals. They shared their experience in handling cases with limited resources available during the time they served at these hospitals. The session was held under chairmanship of Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr M Ramani and with Dr K Ramesh Reddy, superintendent of Niloufer Hospital.

It was organised after seven maternal deaths in the state in six-days (from Thursday to Tuesday). Agenda of the meeting was to learn how the retired gynecologists handled complex cases and how the serving doctors can bring down maternal mortality rate.

Key resolutions

A few outcomes of the deliberations were, “The referrals of regular Obstetric cases from peripheral hospital should be minimised to only high risk cases. So that tertiary care hospitals can give quality care,” as per minutes of the meeting.

It added that standard protocols according to all international guidelines should be strictly followed and documentation should be thorough.

“To provide advanced central sterilisation department in all hospitals,” it added.

“We will organise a training session for Post Graduate students where the retired gynaecologists will teach about post-operative care, pre-operative check ups, how to write case sheets and other aspects,” said Dr Ramani.
