BHUPALPALLY : In a move indicating the resilience of Maoist activities in Telangana, in spite of police claims that it had effectively controlled the movement, police unearthed and defused two landmines planted by the banned CPI (Maoist) party Naxalites near Allubaka between Venkatapuram and Cherla on Monday.
According to Euturnagaram ASP Rahul Hegde, the mines were detected by police Road Operation Party, who were on their routine scanning of Venkatapuram-Cherla road. “As the party reached Allubaka they saw wires coming near a road passing a culvert and the road was unnaturally low. They got suspicious and alerted the bomb squad, who defused the two landmines kept in a aluminum bucket,” he said.
The ASP stated that the landmine was planted purportedly targeting the police . ‘‘There are lot of shandies in Allubaka where people from nearby villages and Chhattisgarh visit on a regular basis. Even Naxals visit the area to collect their rations. Hence, the police keep track of their activities in the area. Since lot of politicians and police pass through this route, the mines were planted to target them,” he claimed.
The last time police recovered landmines in the agency area was at Palem Vagu in March. A case under Explosives Act was registered and investigation is on.
