A 22-year-old mentally unstable woman, who her family kept captive allegedly to prevent her from escaping was rescued by her neighbours in Jagtial town of Telangana yesterday, reported ANI.

Chityala Geetha was reportedly chained in a room by her three brothers and sisters-in-law.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Geetha, a resident of Vani Nagar area, was found crying in front of her house with her hands tied in chains last evening. She told the neighbours that she was being tortured by her brothers and sister-in-law, who forced her to do all the household work.

V Srinivas, a local told this newspaper that Geetha claims to be an arts graduate and worked as a private school teacher. She alleged that her sisters-in-law have been torturing her for the last few years and even her brothers used to thrash her.

She had tried to run away from home but they tied her hands with iron chains and locked it behind her back.

The neighbours with the local municipal councillor's help took her to Jagtial police station, where her chains were removed. The cops immediately summoned her brothers who said Geetha has been mentally unstable since she was 11 years old and they had spent a huge amount of money on her treatment.

Jagtial town police inspector R Prakash told HT “The woman appeared to be very much disturbed mentally though she was speaking normally at times. We are sending her to the hospital to get her checked. If she is found normal, we will take action against the brothers as per the law. In any case, chaining a person is not proper”.

Geetha who lost her father a few years back will reportedly be shifted to the State Home for Women and Child Welfare in Hyderabad if it is found that her family members tortured her.
