HYDERABAD: Following a report in these columns about a woman patient at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) losing out on a crucial opportunity for a liver transplantation, owing to the hospital’s lack of sufficient stock of preservative solutions, Telangana Director of Medical Education Dr K Ramesh Reddy has passed orders to stock enough of the solution and other resources required for transplantations to be taken up.

It is learnt that the woman is still awaiting a liver for organ transplantation. The issue of non-availability of organs preservative solution at Osmania General Hospital was taken to the Telangana Director of medical Education Dr K Ramesh Reddy on Friday.

On Wednesday, though a liver was harvested from a donor, liver transplantation on a 43-year-old woman at OGH could not be taken up as preservative solution HTK was not available. A report was published in these columns on how the woman lost out on the crucial opportunity and how the donated liver went unutilised.

Usually, two sets of the solution is kept ready at hospital as it cannot be predicted when organs would be donated. However, it is not clear whether any inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

The surgical gastroenterology unit will be shifted from Osmania General Hospital to Gandhi Hospital as the former hospital building is dilapidated. If any patient at OGH requires surgical gastroenterology consultation, they will be referred to Gandhi Hospital. Officials have checked OTs at Gandhi hospital.
