HYDERABAD: The Telangana State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has recently held that the death of engineering student Rajasekhar in 2011 was due to the negligence of the management of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal.  It directed the management to pay `9.7 lakh towards compensation to the parents of the deceased student.

The commission bench comprising president Justice BN Rao Nalla and member Patil Vithal Rao passed these orders in a petition filed by A Shyam Rao and Jyothi, parents of the deceased student, who held the NIT management responsible for the death of their son, who drowned in Lakkavaram cheruvu on Dec 9, 2011. They sought for payment of `15 lakh towards compensation, `10 lakh for mental agony and `one lakh towards miscellaneous expenses which included funeral, transportation and so on.

Disagreeing with the submissions of the NIT management, the bench pointed out that the judgments cited by them related to college fees, admissions, certificates, examinations and so on, but the present case was a different one. When the parents have admitted their son in the hostel for study purpose,it was the responsibility of the management to look after his safety.  Though the student had died accidentally the parents were entitled for compensation, the bench directed the management to pay `9.7 lakh towards compensation.
