HYDERABAD: Speaking to students about the paucity of jobs in today’s market, the Vice-President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu, asked the youngsters to embrace the fourth industrial revolution. “The fourth industrial revolution and the advances in digital technology and robotics will together make certain types of jobs obsolete and also create many new jobs,” he said. The Vice-President emphasised on the role of universities in developing global citizens and not just providing quality education.

While taking part in the 8th convocation of GITAM University, Hyderabad Campus, here on Saturday, Naidu called upon university faculties to devote more time to relevant research.
“The economic growth of a country is highly dependent on the creativity of human resources and innovation through research and development. Universities should equip students with the multi-disciplinary knowledge and inter-disciplinary skills to study these problems and look for solutions to meet the challenges,” he added.

Participating in the convocation as the guest of honour, Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao spoke at length about various initiatives undertaken by the state government. Harish Rao said, “I would like to see more Telugu-speaking students sitting for the All India Service exams. Most of the students study here but settle in European countries and the USA. Students should attempt writing these exams to serve the motherland,” The Vice-President too echoed the same sentiment, “Go, no one is telling you not to, but learn, earn and then come back home,” said Naidu.

Naidu asked students to focus on research-oriented fields of study and asked them to stay away from politics. “India is a global house of young people, the whole world is looking towards India for our youth and their talent,” he added. The 8th convocation of GITAM saw the passing out of two doctorate fellows and over 1,060 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The toppers of management and various branches of technology were awarded gold medals.
