HYDERABAD: Though marred with several controversies, the University of Hyderabad has been ranked fifth among the top 10 universities in the country by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2018. The results of the survey, that considered 200 varsities, was announced by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday.

Totally in the universities category, there were four institutions from Telangana within the top-100 -- Osmania University at 28, Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University at 82 and IIT-Hyderabad at 98. In 2017 rankings, there were only two from the State.

Not surprisingly, Telangana also has four institutions under the top 50  engineering institutions in the country -- IIT-Hyderabad at 9th place, NIT Warangal at 25, IIIT-H at 38 and Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University-H at 42.

Nalsar University of Law was adjudged the third best law institute in the country and National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, the sixth top one for pharmacy. However, in categories like management, medicine, architecture and degree colleges, the state could not make a significant mark in the rankings.

Commenting on being ranked fifth among all Universities and 11th among all the Institutions in the country, an improvement from last year’s seven and 14 ranks in the respective categories, UoH vice-chancellor Prof Appa Rao Podile credited the “honour to stakeholders of the University” and said efforts would be made for further improvement.
