HYDERABAD: The Palamuru-Rangareddy lift irrigation scheme (PRLIS) works too will be expedited on the lines of the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation scheme (KLIS) once the court cases are resolved, irrigation minister T Harish Rao has said.

Reviewing the progress of PRLIS works at Jala Soudha here on Friday, the minister alleged that some political parties filed cases in courts against PRLIS. “Once the court cases are cleared, the project works will be expedited,” he said at a review meeting held here on Friday.

The Palamuru-Rangareddy lift irrigation scheme is divided into 189 packages and Harish Rao reviewed the progress of work of each package.

As against 66 lakh cubic metres of work in Package-1, 18 lakh cubic metres of work has been completed so far. Harish Rao directed that the underground pump house, gravity canal and the construction of tunnel should be expedited. “If these works are completed, the government can supply drinking water to Mahbubnagar people in next summer. The engineers should accord priority to completion of Package-1 works,” he said.

Under Package-2, work on the Anjanagiri reservoir is going on. Under Reach-2 of Package-2, the officials will rock-fill the dam system to overcome the soil problem. The same system was adopted in the construction of Tehri dam on Bhagirathi river in Uttarakhand. When there is a problem in the soil, the rock-fill dam system is adopted. “We are in touch with the engineers of Tehri dam to adopt the same technology for Palamuru-Rangareddy,” the engineers said.

Because of the soil problem, the Tehri dam on the Bhagirathi in Uttarakhand, the highest in Asia, was rock-filled. A rockfill dam is a type of embankment dam which primarily comprises compacted rock materials.

Kaleshwaram speed trial successful
The speed trial run conducted on pump house of fifth motor under package-8 of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) was successful on Friday. The fifth motor in the world’s biggest underground pumping station started working successfully today. The trial run on the fourth motor would start on Saturday. By Sunday, two motors will be ready for pumping water.
