Link canal to be constructed to rejuvenate Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP)

HYDERABAD: The Irrigation department is mulling over constructing a link canal from Flood Flow canal (FFC) to Kakatiya canal as part of rejuvenation of Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP). The earlier plan of drawing water from Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) will now be dropped as it would have taken more time.

According to official sources, the link canal from FFC at 88.4 km will be connected at Kakatiya canal at 97.46 km. This will supplement to the ayacut of SRSP near Thatipalli village in  Jagitial district. “The work is programmed to be completed on war footing basis to supplement the localised 2.5 lakh ayacut under D/70 to D/95 of SRSP for Rabi 2018,” official sources said.

The KLIS will pump two tmcft of water through Package-8 into FFC at 99.025 km. For this, the engineer-in-chief (projects), Karimnagar, on May 14 submitted a proposal for supplementation of 2.5 lakh acres ayacut of Kakatiya canal near Thatipalli village, as there is a possibility to feed SRSP ayacut by gravity from Kaleshwaram through Package-8.

“Already detailed survey and investigation have been carried out. Several alternatives have also been studied and final alignment has been fixed for the shortest length with minimum structures,” the officials said.

Pumping Kaleshwaram water from around 100 km will increase the losses. Thus, an alternative was almost finalised, sources said. “By constructing the link canal, it is possible to supplement an ayacut of 2.51 lakh acres by gravity under the distributaries D/70 to D/94 of Kakatiya Canal of SRSP. Whenever there are lean inflows into SRSP, the ayacut of 2.51 lakh acres can be supplemented with available water of KLIS. The land acquisition required is just 76 acres,” the officials said. Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao too had given his nod for this alternative link canal.

The link canal detailed estimate is worked out as `43.20 crore with current SSR of 2018-19, sources said. A head regulator is proposed at the off-take point of the Link Canal.  “To have a smooth flow and non-turbulence velocities into the Kakatiya canal, eight number of 2 M drops, one number of 1 M drop and one number of 2.708 M drop cum SLRB is proposed on this Link Canal,” sources said.

‘Start wet-run for 3 motors by Sept end’
Hyderabad: Minister T Harish Rao directed the officials to start wet-run for three motors by September end in phase I of SRSP rejuvenation programme. At a video conference with officials on Monday, he instructed them to follow “tail-to-head” system for supplying irrigation water to farmers under SRSP in ensuing Kharif. He also directed them to complete the SRSP stage-1 works by July second week
