HYDERABAD: After completing the rationalisation of polling stations ahead of December 7 elections, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has proposed relocation of 49 polling stations and changes in nomenclature of about 262 polling stations in Hyderabad district covering 15 constituencies.

According to GHMC officials, the proposal to relocate the polling stations to new buildings was necessitated by factors like the owner of the building, which was originally proposed for a polling booth, becoming an election contestant or developing strong sympathies for a candidate or a political party and the dilapidated condition of the building.

Among the main reasons for proposing changes in nomenclature of 262 polling stations are upgradation of a primary school to a high school in which the polling station is situated, the title of the building transferred and renamed and due to errors in address and other details of the building. The proposed shifting of polling stations to new buildings may create confusion among voters on the polling day if they are not brought to the notice of the voters early.

However, the officials said that the proposed changes would be submitted to the Election Commission of India for approval and after getting the approval, the changes would be published, and all contesting candidates and political parties would also be informed in writing before obtaining proper acknowledgement from all concerned.

Jubilee Hills tops in change of polling station locations with nine followed by Karwan with eight and  Yakutpura with seven. Chandrayangutta tops in change of nomenclature of polling station buildings with a whopping 93 followed by Nampally with 71 and Secunderabad Cantonment with 34.

The proposed change of polling station locations and change of nomenclature in Assembly constituencies in Hyderabad district include Musheerabad (6 and 3), Malakpet (5 and 2), Amberpet (2 and 19), Jubilee Hills (9 and 0), Sanathnagar (1 and 4),  Nampally (3 and 71), Karwan (8 and 9), Charminar (2  and 14), Chandrayagutta (3 and 93), Yakutpura (7 and 2), Bahadurpura (0  and 9), (Secunderabad 2 and 2).
