Every morning as she dons the director’s hat, her vision for what she wants to achieve for the day doesn’t change. The journey to achieve that goal may change for Ritu R Chandra, the director and producer of upcoming theatrical production, Mamma Mia Again! The script focusses on four women who live life on their terms, just as women all over the world should, Chandra believes. In her play, she reiterates the importance of being strong and being the master of one’s own destiny. “You make the choice—good, bad or ugly. That’s how you can be in control of you lives,” she says.
The play is a musical adaptation of the 2008 British-American-Swedish musical romantic comedy film adapted from the 1999 West End/2001 Broadway musical Mamma Mia!, that follows the events of a bride-to-be searching for her father, creating an dreadful mess in doing so.
Through her directorial endovenous, Chandra evolves. It’s a process that creates and recreates everyday, with every rehearsal. “You learn and adapt along the way,” she says.
Each time she directs and meets new people, she learns something new and uses that knowledge to invest into her next play. “To give ideas shape, colour and form is what makes me feel the most satiated,” says Chandra.
The event is also a fundraiser for transformational Women on Wheels programme that empowers disadvantaged women to become drivers. “Gender equality is a fundamental right and women are equal to men. They need to be empowered,” she says.
Women on Wheels by Azad Foundation and Sakha Consulting Wings is a social initiative that gives resources to poor women to earn a livelihood.
