CHENNAI: It has not yet been a year since they were wiped out of even their traditional strongholds in the Assembly elections. But the smaller parties are now fancying chances of reviving their base due to the turmoil in the AIADMK.

This optimism of gaining some of the lost ground stems from the state of flux that Tamil Nadu politics has been since the demise of Jayalalithaa.

“Jayalalithaa was an iconic personality, under whom the AIADMK secured most Dalit votes in our strongholds. But, in her absence, the situation is volatile and this will help us regain those votes,” said Vanni Arasu, deputy general secretary of VCK.

Such was their marginalisation that even Thol Thirumavalavan lost from Kattumannarkoil that was considered to be a safe seat. This, despite being in alliance with DMDK, TMC in the four-party PWA comprising MDMK, VCK and the two Left parties
