NEW DELHI: This is every drinker’s road to paradise. A street in the national capital is named Piyakad Road (Drinker’s Road). But though liquor lovers are making merry, residents of the area are not high on happiness. Troubled by the name tag, they have asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to find a solution to the “problem” of the epithet.

However, officials have no clue of the road’s existence.

Snuck in Shalimar Bagh’s A Block in north Delhi off Bhagwan Mahavir Marg, Piyakad Road also shows up on Google Maps, laying to rest any hangover that it is local lore. Locals suspect that the misnomer comes from a wine shop on the road many years ago, from where people bought alcohol and drank in its vicinity. The wine shop has long gone, but the name has stuck.

Ordering food or shopping online is a troublesome affair for residents of Piyakad Road. “When we order a home delivery, we have to mention our address as Piyakad Road, which is embarrassing. There’s no formal name of the road; it’s an internal lane whose name we want to do away with,” says Sumit Bhutani.

Some residents have complained to North MCD Mayor Preeti Aggarwal about the road’s name. Says Mamta Nagpal, former councillor of Shalimar Bagh (South), “I haven’t heard about the road, but if it does exist, someone’s mischievous intent must be behind it.”
