NEW DELHI: It reminds one of the proverbial darkness under the lamp. The areas behind the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), near North Block, embassies of the US, China, Japan, Sardar Patel Marg are on the list of 2,837 new dark spots, identified by the Delhi Police.

Lutyens’ Delhi, the home to ministers and bureaucrats, has 74 streets which lack proper light. South West Delhi, however, has topped the list with 804 such spots in the area.

Hold your torchlight tight. The areas home and office to the country’s high and mighty lack light at night.

“Areas behind the PMO, North Block, Sardar Patel Marg, India Gate area, Kautilya Marg to US Embassy, Niti Marg to Nayay Marg, Rafi Marg, Dhaula Kuan flyover to Army Public School and Shankar Road have been identified as dark spots/streets,” a Delhi Police official said.

The city, which becomes crime-prone at night, recorded 23 cases of snatching, six molestations and nine robberies on the streets till March 15 this year. On an average, 694 FIRs are registered in a day and in 75 days, almost 52,000 cases have been filed this year.

Police fear that in case of any crime in these areas at night, they won’t be able get CCTV footages due to lack of lights.

“In a recent meeting, LG Anil Baijal had asked Delhi Police to identify streets which have no lights, making them more vulnerable to crime,” a senior Delhi government official said. Police had compiled a report and sent it along with a letter to PWD, NDMC, MCD and other agencies seeking immediate action.
