NEW DELHI: The unflappable Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik is not amused with Delhi’s finest. Events took a bizarre turn when a group of drunken cops on a night out to sample the dubious charms of GB Road attacked their brothers in khaki inside a brothel. A doctor from Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and a sub-inspector on probation are among the culprits who have since been arrested.

A criminal case has also been registered against them for voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty, obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions and assaulting/using criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty. Sources added they are likely to be sacked next week.

Delhi police said a brothel operator summoned a PCR van after the inebriated men in khaki created a ruckus in the kotha alarming the girls and customers. According to a report compiled by DCP central MS Randhawa, the ardent cops got into a heated argument with a prostitute over right of entry. Says the report, “On the night intervening 12-13 May, four people-probationary SI Mohit Kumar Chowdhary posted at PTC, Constable Sumit Sharma posted in Licensing Unit constable Nitesh Kumar at PCR Unit and Nitesh Chauhan working as doctor in RML Hospital went to Kotha No. 64 GB Road in civil clothes and starting quarrelling there.

On getting information about quarrel, constable Deep Ram of PS Kamla Market also reached there and tried to pacify them but all four started abusing and scuffling with him.”

Deep Ram’s uniform was torn in the scuffle. The indignant man called for help from Kamla Market police station, following which Ct. Sumit and Ct. Jitender reached the spot. They weren’t spared either. More cops were called, and the aggressors were subdued. They were then taken to LNJP Hospital and were found to be under the influence.

Randhawa has a reputation for taking action against errant staff when he was Additional DCP East. Patnaik has deemed the incident ‘gross misconduct’.
