NEW DELHI: Delhi University’s sports quota has gone upmarket with the varsity introducing
two super categories—golf and horse riding—for admission to various courses in it colleges.
But apparently, the university has received only three applications for the categories in the past one week after the registration process began on May 22.
In the past five days, 14,000 students have filed applications for 1,500 seats in undergraduate (UG) courses under the sports quota, while the number of applications received was just 6,000, last year. As many as 900 students had got admission in DU colleges under 36 different categories in 2016-17, the DU officials informed.
Short of Coaches to Hold Trials
Meanwhile, the varsity authorities are worried as they don’t have coaches for some games to conduct trials. DU has a pool of 150 physical education teachers. “Any physical education teacher, who has an experience of 10 years or more, examines capability of players in trials. Apart from this, we have to outsource experts from Sport Academy of India (SAI),” said a Delhi University official.
Last year, 2,000 sports quota applications with fake certificates were cancelled.
“To avoid any such fraud, we have started online verification of certificates from this year. Even the certificate weightage has been decreased to 40 per cent from last year’s 50 per cent. Now, trials carry 60 per cent weightage,” said Anil Kalkal, Director, Delhi University Sports Council.
DU also has the provision of seeking admission on the basis of one or more sports. The admission process will continue till June 12.
