Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal on Monday got the unwanted recognition of being the country’s first bishop to be jailed, for rape charges.
A nun who participated in the agitation demanding Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal’s arrest has been barred from church activities, including teaching the Bible and offering Holy Communion.
Though Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal has been arrested in the case related to the alleged rape of a nun, the mission of the SOS Action Council, which had demanded his arrest, is not over.
The Church is taking revenge on the nuns who have expressed their solidarity with the protest.
Sister Lucy Kalapurekal of the Syro Malabar Catholic Church also told the media that when she visited her congregation in Wayanad in the morning, she was told to keep away from her church duties.
The trip to the convent is part of the police's evidence gathering. According to the victim's complains, Mulakkal raped her at the VIP rest room, where he has been staying.
Activists and leaders of NGOs greeted the nuns with slogans as they climbed on to the stage where they spent 14 days demanding the arrest of Bishop Franco.
Since no political party was willing to back them, the protesting nuns had to rely solely on the civil society’s support to expose the injustice meted out to them.

Police officers said they were able to present clear evidence, collected during the course of their investigation, before the bishop to convince his arrest.
When the news of the arrest first started to trickle in, the venue, where the protest by the nuns entered the 14th day on Friday, was filled with joy.
Franco complained of chest pain when he was being taken to Kottayam Police club from the Crime Branch office in Thrippunithura in Ernakulam district Friday night, they said.
It was after high drama and suspense that began around noon that top police officers finally confirmed the arrest of the bishop, around 8 pm.
