An official tally given by Laos' secretive government said 35 people died in the collapse of the Xe Pian Xe Namnoy saddle dam, a Korean-built structure which had not yet been completed.
Being constructed by Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy Power Co, a joint venture of South Korean, Thai and Lao companies, the hydroelectric power project is estimated to cost $1.02 billion.
The group of survivors were stranded by floodwaters after they fled up a hill on Monday as the Xe-Namnoy dam broke under heavy rain, leaving several villages devastated by flash floods.
Monday night's dam break inflicted an unprecedented catastrophe on Laos, a poor country with the little capacity to manage remote, large-scale rescue operations.
In an update on Wednesday afternoon, state-run Laos News Agency said hundreds of people remained unaccounted for, with at least 50 missing from the village of Ban Mai alone.
The once-isolated Southeast Asian country, one of the world's few remaining communist states, has an ambitious dam-building scheme in order to become the "battery of Asia".
