Khartoum, Aug 6 (IANS) A panel of the African Union (AU) has embarked on determining the zero line with the aim of establishing a demilitarised zone between Sudan and South Sudan, Sudan's leading daily Al-Ray Al-Am reported Tuesday.

A panel of the African Union (AU) has embarked on determining the zero line with the aim of establishing a demilitarised zone between Sudan and South Sudan, Sudan's leading daily Al-Ray Al-Am reported Tuesday.

"The African Union committee has started its work on the ground by determining three areas prior to the determination of the temporary zero line according to the African Union map," the paper said, according to Xinhua.

It said the committee is expected to complete its work by the mid of August and an AU delegation has met with technical representatives from Sudan and South Sudan.

The AU earlier decided to form a committee to supervise the establishment of a demilitarised zone on the joint border between Sudan and South Sudan to end the border security tensions between the two.

Sudan and South Sudan dispute over five border areas including the oil-rich Abyei region.

On Sep 27 last year, the two countries signed a package of agreements on various issues of security, status of citizens, border and oil.
