‘Peer pressure killed Sandhya Rani’

GUNTUR: Dr B Sandhya Rani may have committed suicide due to peer pressure and ill health as she was not inclined to pursue her post graduation at the government medical college in Guntur, argued the counsel of professor Dr VAA Lakshmi who is accused of abetting Sandhya Rani’s suicide. Lakshmi’s counsel also alleged that Sandhya was irregular in attending to her duties at the Guntur General Hospital.

Advocate Narra Srinivasa Rao appearing on behalf of the accused during the hearing for her anticipatory bail application in Guntur on Tuesday, has stated that professor Lakshmi used to treat her students like her children and never ill treated any of them. “The victim may have ended her life due to mental pressure and ill health. Professor Lakshmi was only acting as per the instructions of the hospital superintendent to maintain strict attendance of students,” he added

The bail application filed by professor Lakshmi came for hearing before the Third Additional Sessions and District Judge in Guntur on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, assistant public prosecutor A Varadarajulu submitted to the court that the cause of suicide was professor Lakshmi’s cruel treaatment of the deceased as disclosed through Dr Sandhya’s letters to her parents, husband and the police and in her dairy. For the last one year, professor Lakshmi has been harassing the victim and the case diary of the police has noted the attitude and behaviour of the professor towards the deceased as the root cause, he said.

Y Koteswara Rao and P Raja Rao, advocates appearing on behalf of deceased Dr Sandhya Rani’s father B Sattayya argued and submitted before the court that in spite of repeated requests of the deceased and her father, the professor had harassed her.
