CBI books bank official for converting Rs 1.51 cr

The Anti-Corruption Wing of the Central Bureau of Investigation has booked a third case in a week in connection with bank fraud post demonetisation.

BENGALURU: The Anti-Corruption Wing of the Central Bureau of Investigation has booked a third case in a week in connection with bank fraud post demonetisation.
The CBI has now filed a case against Parashivamurthy, head cashier at the State Bank of Mysore branch in Kollegal in Chamarajanagar district, unknown bank officials and private individuals.
Murthy has been accused of exchanging old notes for Rs 100 notes worth Rs 1.51 crore, in violation of the Reserve Bank of India guidelines. According to the FIR, the accused issued legal notes “to select co-conspirators across the cash counter without obtaining the application for exchange with proof of ID or approval of the branch head”. Moreover, the exchanges were made in excess of the maximum permitted limit of Rs 4,000 per person.

Apart from this, Murthy, along with other accused, deposited the illegally exchanged denominations in the currency chest of the branch, thereby disguising it as genuinely exchanged notes.
All in four days
The high value transaction of Rs 1.51 crore was completed in a four-day period between November 10 and 13. Murthy has been accused of abusing his official position. The abuse was for “pecuniary advantage for himself and he facilitated a few private individuals to convert their ill-gotten money to legal tender”, the FIR filed on Tuesday read.
He is also accused of ignoring the relevant RBI guidelines from time to time, thereby cheating the bank.

Cases booked against three in DD scam
Having unearthed the demand draft scam in Bengaluru the Central Bureau of Investigation booked a case against three people. The accused are Lakshminarayana, senior manager and branch head, Central Bank of India, Basavanagudi branch, S Gopal and Ashwin G Sunku, directors of Omkar Parimal Mandir. The bank officials had issued DDs for less than D50,000 and converted approximately D71.49 lakh of black money between November 15 and 18. To ensure that the illegal transactions remained off the radar, the bank officials issued 149 DDs in favour of a private firm. The amount issued in each of the DDs for less than D50,000 was staggered by the officials. These DDs were encashed in exchange of old demonetised notes. The accused have been handed over to the CBI for five days.
