‘Beef blues’ strike city foodies

They say they’ll miss their favourite foods if the meat becomes ‘rare’

BENGALURU: If beef becomes scarce in the city, there will be broken-hearted foodies. They would miss Kerala-style roast and medium-rare steaks the most, they say. Burgers got only an occasional mention.
Twenty-year-old Shreedevi VK says that she will miss beef ularthiyathu – a Kerala dish where the meat is marinated with pepper and chilli flakes, and roasted with shallots, curry leaves and coconut shavings.

“This goes well with roti and rice,” she says, adding wistfully, “I had it only last week.”
Nabhan, a 26-year-old working professional says, this is his favourite too. “When beef is juicy, it beats every other meat,” he says.

Full-time musician Colent says that he had the roast only yesterday to “celebrate the ban”. “I love the Kerala beef fry with chips of coconut in it, and think it goes best with parottas,” he says. Parottas, rotis with many flaky layers made from refined flour, are different from the firmer parathas.
22-year-old Farseena says that her favourite is the beef steak. “I love them served with steamed vegetables,” she says. “I am not a big fan of the veggies otherwise and have them only when I have a slab of well-cooked beef on the side.” She had her treat this weekend and enjoyed it but adds that she does not want to comment on the ban. “I respect every religion,” she says.

Designer Abel, 24, says that he is “totally against any ban”. “It makes no sense. I love my steaks,” he says.
Shreya, a media professional, “I can’t do without medium rare steak with mushroom gravy. I had a month back with friends at Millers 46. It was juicy with a pink centre, and the gravy was rich. Chicken steak just doesn’t cut it.”
Startup founder Vikas, 32, will miss his  double-cheese beef burger from Mc Donalds. “It is very unfortunate that beef has been singled out... if it is about animal rights, why not protect the other animals by banning chicken and mutton as well.”
