BENGALURU: A man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly causing burn injuries to his wife by throwing an electric iron at her, and assaulting her with a knife.

The shocking incident, which allegedly occurred on Saturday, came to light on Tuesday. As per the FIR registered by Anne (name changed), aged 26, a resident of Lingarajpuram, her husband Dilip Kumar (32) came home drunk at around 11 pm on Saturday and went to sleep. He woke up at 2 am and demanded that his wife get jewellery from her mother’s place. When she refused, as per the FIR, he first struck her left hand with the wire of an electric iron. He then heated up the iron and burnt her private part with it and proceeded to assault her with a knife.

The woman told her mother about the incident and was admitted to a hospital with severe injuries. Police said she spent two to three days in the hospital and was back home now. She reportedly did not inform any of the neighbours regarding the incident.

Kumar was arrested on Monday by Banasawadi Police from his residence, and is currently behind bars. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP)-East Ajay Hilori denied that the woman’s private parts had been injured. The DCP said the accused, in a drunken state, assaulted his wife, adding that he had thrown the heated electric iron at her stomach, due to which she suffered burn injuries.

Police said that Kumar often got drunk and would then assault his wife and accuse her of having a relationship with another man. As per a police official, Anne produced medical certificates issued by a doctor as proof of her injuries. The couple have two children.

A case was registered by the victim on Sunday around 3.30 pm, and the accused has been booked under Section 326 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) - voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means.
