IISc, MAHE chosen as ‘Institutes of Eminence’

BENGALURU:The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and Manipal Academy for Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal, have found a place among six higher education institutions chosen for the status of ‘Institutes of eminence’ from across India. This status is granted by the Union government directly under the Prime Minister Office.

Union Human Resource Minister Prakash Javdekar released the list in New Delhi on Monday.
There were over 100 applications before the government for recognition under the scheme — both from public and private players; of which, six were chosen — three public-funded and three private-funded. From Karnataka, IISc has been chosen under public-funded category and MAHE, private-funded.
As per details available from the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), the public-funded institutions will receive funding of `1,000 crore for the next five years.

The application was invited through University Grants Commission (UGC) a few months ago.
However, the institute selected under private-funded category will not get financial assistance, but will have complete autonomy and visibility at the global level.

Other applicants from the state are: Indian Institute of Management-Bengaluru, National Institute of Technology, Suratkal, University of Mysore; JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mysore, Acharya Foundation, Bengaluru, and Indian Institute for Human Settlements, Bengaluru.

HIGHLIGHTS OF CENTRE’S SCHEME
Public-funded institutions will get financial assistance of `1,000 crore for five years
Private institutions which get the tag will have complete autonomy
Total of 20 institutions will be selected.
Within five years after getting the tag, they must be recognised in global Ranking Framework
Institutes to deposit `1 crore as processing fee
