CHENNAI: Brainstorming on new ideas, identifying challenges, devising innovative policies to work with NextGen employees and building them into leaders of tomorrow, the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), here on Wednesday, kick-started the annual NASSCOM HR Summit 2011.

The summit focused on identifying and understanding the ‘New Normal for Soft Assets’ discussing amongst others the key theme of employee trust and alignment in the workplace.

Rajendra Pawar, Chairman, NASSCOM, said, “With India becoming a hub for highly skilled and knowledge based jobs, it is vital for the industry to constantly map and build relevant skills through innovative talent initiatives.”

NASSCOM this year is undertaking some unique initiatives – setting up the Sector Skill Council under NSDC and introducing the NASSCOM Exemplary Talent (NExT) Practices Awards 2011. Both these initiatives are aimed at enhancing the talent pool in the industry with focus on standards and practices, he added.

“We are hopeful that the Sector Skill Council will provide a roadmap and platform for diverse industry and academic initiatives to build a robust pool of industry ready talent and help India enhance its global competitiveness,’’ Pawar said.

Speaking on the occasion, Som Mittal, President, NASSCOM, said, “The future competitive edge for the industry will be determined by its ability to become a strategic partner to customers. This will require investment in domain and focus on developing a pool of specialized talent.”

“NASSCOM, by way of its various initiatives, is aiming to create a robust and continuous pipeline of talent, which will be done by continuously assessing candidates on key skills and also provide them with training-need-analysis,’’ he said.

The Indian IT-BPO industry has been a significant growth catalyst for the Indian economy employing nearly 2.5 million people directly and contributing to almost 25 per cent of India’s exports. There is a need for multi skill development and hence, the role of talent management is becoming vital in today’s ever-changing and demanding business landscape, he added.
