India to remain influential oil buyer: Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan

NEW DELHI: Stakeholders in the oil & gas sector in India should be mindful of global factors and respond appropriately, petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, adding India is going to be a big market for emerging alternative fuels. He noted that India is in a transition stage of adopting alternative fuels.

“India will remain fastest growing market...and will remain an influential buyer in the global energy market given our dependence on imports with 80 percent oil and 50 percent gas,” he said.

Fluctuation in the global oil scenario impacts the oil economy and the fiscal deficit.  He said the opinion of experts in the oil sector is critical to decide if gas should be an interim fuel or not. “A lot of our planning depends on the decision to go in for renewable energy and gas...” said Pradhan.

He also urged Indian professionals to make their presence felt in global oil & gas sector as they have done in the information technology sector. Pradhan was speaking at the India Energy Forum organised by CERAWEEK.

“One way for skilling and improving the availability of professionals from India is through collaboration between industry and academia,” Pradhan noted.Agreeing with this view, Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Naseer said India could soon emerge as a major sourcing market for professionals in this sector.
The company is in discussion for sponsoring the Indian Premier League in India next year.
