BENGALURU: Swedish luxury car company Volvo Cars has rolled out its first car completely assembled in India, in Bengaluru on Tuesday. As a first, the company launched its XC-90 model car assembled at its Hoskote plant near Bengaluru. The company aims to fully build these car units at this plant from now on. Until now, these cars were assembled in Europe only.

Speaking to Express, Charles Frump, recently appointed managing director of Volvo Auto India, said, “We are expanding our markets in local areas. We are looking at the possibility of bringing in additional cars. We are looking at the SPA (scalable product architecture) platform cars. We are really now committed to being here (India).”

The company is looking at sales of 2,000 units this year, which would be a 25 per cent increase year-on-year in its sales. It is also aiming at doubling the number of its dealers in the country, in an attempt to reach out to tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Volvo Cars is working together with Volvo Group India - the truck, bus, construction equipment and Penta engines manufacturer – for its assembly operations and is making use of Volvo Group India’s existing infrastructure and production licenses near Bengaluru, an official release stated.

“The past three years have been good for us in India and we noticed a positive and encouraging growth in terms of increased segment share, world-class product and new dealer appointments,” Frump added.
