CHENNAI: There are few couples who haven’t grappled with ‘issues’ at all in their marriage. Narjaya, a new theatre group in the city, is all set to stage What is to be done with Sathe? a play that explores the many conflicting dynamics of the husband-wife relationship. Penned by Marathi writer Rajeev Naik, it was translated to many languages and staged across the country, even Chennai, a couple of years ago.

Lets Talk Life has now decided to bring the popular theatrical piece back to Chennai. This will be the second directorial venture for Narjaya and the first production for Lets Talk Life.
Sharada Vijay, the founder of the Lets Talk Life says, “We were already looking to step out of our usual poetry session; that was when this production came our way. We decided to zero in on this because the play reflects what we do at Lets Talk Life. It focuses on the problems every couple faces at some point.”
Anantharaman Karthik, founder of Narjaya, has been active in theatre for eight years.

He began his stint as a director with Somewhere between The Sky and The Sea (Dec 2016), which was well received by the Chennai audience. “Now, we chose to do Sathe because of its uniqueness. It’s all about how Abhay and Salma (the married couple) discuss their professional lives every day and continuously hover on the question of whether emotions should stay out of work,” says Anantharaman.
Adding to that, Kamatchi, who will be playing the role of Salma says, “It also talks about how one perceives their work as being excellent or mediocre depending on others’ views.”

Anantharaman says that he chose Sathe because the issues are still relevant, despite the script being a decade old. “It is universal. We couldn’t get a better partner than Lets Talk Life because they believe in giving a platform to problems that are not usually discussed”.
So what can the audience expect? “It is going to be only two of us on stage. The audience needs to focus on the storytelling and the husband-wife dynamics. Our message is that married life is as complicated as your career, and your professional life is as intimate as your personal life,” he explains.

‘What is to be done with Sathe?’
will be staged on May 13 and 14, between 4 pm and 7 pm at Alliance Francaise of Madras.
