BANGALORE: Ricky Kej is the newest shining star in Sandalwood.
The music director and producer shot to fame with the movie Accident, for which he composed six songs and gave the background score.
Kej has also made his mark on the map of international music with the albums Communicative Art and Kamasutra Lounge, which were commercially and critically acclaimed.
Born in North Carolina, Kej studied in Bishop Cottons Boy’s High School.
In spite of having an undeniable passion for music, he p u r s u e d dental surgery at the Oxford Dental College in Bangalore due to parental pressure and society’s stereotypical expectations. He says, “I was a pretty good student. I wanted to finish off the course in five years. I did not want to repeat a year and be stuck in college. So I made sure I studied and passed the examinations.” Kej used to go to college and rush to the studios to work on his music. Within a span of four years, he produced over a 1000 jingles for varied clients like Levis, Air India, Nike and Blaupunkt.
Kej feels that formal education is indispensable irrespective of your field.
However, you should study what you want to make a career in. “If I had spent that time between nine to four everyday for five years studying music, I would have been on an entirely different level now.” Kej does not look upon his degree in dentistry as an alternate career option.
“There are ups and downs in every profession so there is no need for a back up.” In India, professions dealing with expression of creativity are approached with a sense of lethargy that does not demand as much effort as do corporate jobs. This is a completely subjective factor, says Kej.
Kej had a natural flair for music since the very beginning and never received any formal training. He self tutored himself by means of books and instructional videos.
His principal in college, Dr Subburao, understood his inclination towards music and supported and inspired him immensely. On being asked about his most cherishable moments in college, Kej recalls the joy he derived from his experiences with the patients that came from the slums. He utilised his free time in college in making free dentures for those who could not afford it.
Kej feels that the college scenario in India has developed, although “the seriousness is getting lower and lower in both students and teachers. There is so much competition that students are looking for new ways of living.” Coming from an all boy’s school, he unfortunately had minimal interaction with girls. But he was in a relationship throughout his college life. Well, faithful to both work and relationships, Kej is a musical man the youth can look up to.
