Six photographers have put their work together for the exhibition, ‘Behind the Lenses’ at Mahua Art Gallery. Hailing from Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore and Kerala, the photographers express themselves visually in a way which is more painterly than limiting themselves to just photographs.
Ajay Rajgarhia, the curator of the show, has trained his eye on the old monuments and vivid colours and textures playing a major role in his frames. Sandeep Biswas, from Delhi, captures abstract, shimmering reflections of our world in puddles, rearview mirrors and windows to stunning effect, while he embarks on an extensive exploration of streetsides and tries to lift the veil on an alternate world of reflections.
Ashok Koshy, who has been photographing for over four decades now, goes back to his roots to capture the graceful dance forms and unique architecture of Kerala. He is also an accomplished flautist and a Kalaripayattu exponent. Leena Kejriwal’s series ‘Tea Shop’, focuses on the kettles that are always there but never noticed, at the ubiquitous chai shops. Bringing out a beautiful side of the old, rusted and stained kettles, she celebrates the character of the seemingly ordinary and mundane things which lie unnoticed all around us. Karan Khanna’s work, is more like a digital painting using vivid colours, simple shapes and slices from a world passing by. Son of famed artist Krishen Khanna, his photographs are more about extensive post-production than capturing a fleeting moment. Vivek Mathew, who is an alumnus of the Light and Life Academy in Ooty, has toyed with shadows and silhouettes to mesmerising effect.
This exhibition is on at Mahua Art Gallery till February 28.
