BANGALORE: Alpana, aripana, madana, rangoli chowkpurana, kolam, pookkalam and muggu - the colourful bed of petals created on floors has different names in various parts of the country.
However, this traditional art with vibrant and enchanting colours, which is part of most of the festivals in India, seems to be losing its charm.
In this backdrop, Shree Sai Gold Palace is organising Rangarang, a rangoli utsava in the city in an effort to revive the art.
TA Sharavana, the proprietor of Shree Sai Gold Palace, says the competition is open for women above 18 years of age. The registration for the competition would begin on July 23.
About 1,500 people are expected to participate in the preliminary round, which will be held at the APS College Ground on August 8. Participants will draw inspiration from characteristics related to Lord Ganesha.
A hundred participants will be selected for the final round, to be held on September 12 on DVG Road.
The winner of the final round will be get 175 grams of gold. All the participants will be given a gift voucher worth Rs 2,500.
“Rangoli not only serves to decorate your house. Creating a rangoli is also good exercise,” says Sharavana.
