I loved the sounds of the rain,” says N Akshath, a Class 3 student, while his classmate R Labdhi confesses that an Assamese poem Olugutty managed to tickle her funny bone. For these little ones, traces of Tuesday morning blues were washed away by an engrossing rendezvous with the world of poetry and stories.

With swaying of hands punctuated by apt gurgling sounds, the primary class children of Calibre Academy, Krishnaswamy Avenue, brought to life images of a violent storm and rain in the garden in the comfort of the school auditorium.

Right from the whistling of the wind to the first splatter of rainfall,  it was a lively session the eager youngsters got the opportunity to enjoy on November 15, part of the National Book Week celebration at the school.

For Sandhya Rao, senior editor, Tulika Publishers, who deluged the children with interesting stories and poems in diverse languages, it was all about entertaining them in her signature style. In Rao’s words, “It was all about using (story) elements that are familiar to them to make it interesting for them.” Students from Class 2 and 3 participated in the session that included the story Sunu Sunu Snail: Storm in the Garden and poems in Assamese and Telugu.
