Doctor designs instruments for easier C-section delivery

The instrument used for expeditious extraction of a head from deep pelvic area is now gaining popularity among  gynaecologists for performing C-section deliveries. Dr N Venkatesh, consultant gynaecologist, St Philomenas Hospital, who took about three years to develop the instrument, opines it is an alternative to a paired outlet forceps instrument.

Venkatesh says, the instrument vectis, helps in reducing the time taken for an operation, adding the entire process takes only about 20 minutes. However, he said that vectis should only be used by gynaecologists who have expertise in using forceps or vaccum instruments. According to sources, this vectis is gaining popularity not only at corporate  hospitals, but even in BBMP maternity homes across the state.

Gynaecologists at the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS),  Bellary, have used vectis during C-section  deliveries of nearly 100 babies.

Dr Virendar Kumar, associate professor, obstetrics and gynecology, VIMS, Bellary says, “Unlike other instruments, the vectis helps in elevating the head to the level of uterine incision.”

Dr H N Gangalakshmi, health officer, BBMP,  said BBMP maternity homes need more such instruments as there are several C-section deliveries at these maternity homes. The instrument is manufactured by a Chennai-based biomedical firm.
