Drama with a message

On a dark lonely night, a young maiden is seen grooming herself and leaving the house to perform her duties. Unlike other days, her husband returns home half an hour early. Today is a special day for the couple as they finally meet each other after a long time.

This innocent yet beautiful scene taken from a play titled Rubdy was staged by Ranga Varthula at a drama festival on the occasion of their second anniversary.

Based on a short story written by playwright Nausheel Mehta, the drama was written in Kannada by Nitish and Hemalatha Lokesh. The play revolves around Savithri, mother of a mentally challenged baby, who enters the city with the intention of earning money for the welfare of her child.

To this end, she is also willing to become a surrogate mother which could earn her as much as Rs 1.25 lakh.

Savithri's role reprised by Deepa added life to the entire drama. Scene one depicts the couple who aspire for a child. The ambitious wife who works for an IT company fears that due to pregnancy she may lose her job. The couple discuss the issue with each other and soon decide to opt for surrogacy. They visit a hospital and enter into an agreement with Savithri.

Soon, the surrogate mother gives birth to a baby, However, in a weird twist of fate, this child too ends up being mentally challenged. The techie couple refuse to accept the child and leave the hospital in a hurry. However, Savithri finds it difficult to abandon her second child. She takes the child in her arms and vows to fight for its future. This decision, though not a smart one, reflects the greatness of a mother's gesture.

Kavya Sha and Nitesh S did complete justice to their roles as the techie couple.

The other roles played by Deepthi Sreenath, Anirudh Vedanthi and Prakruthi Prasad as the mentally challenged baby deserve special mention too. Supriya Acharya's song in the drama was well appreciated by audiences. Overall, the play 'Rubdy' was worth watching because of its message that was both socially relevant and inspiring.
