Bangloreans continue to violate rules by using different sized number plates and that too in different languages and colours.

According to the Bangalore Traffic department, 57,967 cases of defective number plates were reported in 2012 alone.

By law, all plates should be based on modern Hindu- Arabic numerals with Roman alphabet, though many states violate this rule by writing the numerals in the local script.

Other guidelines include having the plate lit up at night and the restriction on the font size.

The guideline also state that the letters ‘IND’ in blue colour on the extreme left centre of the plate should be one fourth the size of the letters and should be buried into the foil or applied by hot stamping.

It should be an integral part of the plate.

But many do not follow these rules.

The meager fine of `100 does not stop them from violating the rules.

“The RTO should make sure that the number plates are not defective while issuing licenses.

The fine is so less that people don’t bother,” said M A Salim, additional commissioner of police (traffic).

He further added that number plates in both English and Kannada are allowed but if it is only in the vernacular language, it is illegal.

Sikandar Pasha, who runs a company that paints number plates on H Siddaiah Road said, “These days requests for fancy number plates has decreased.

When people come with such requests, I warn them that it is illegal, but if they don’t listen, nothing can be done,” he said.

While Revant Kumar from Rajajinagar says that such requests do come and it is carried out.

“I warn them sometimes but the problem is that mostpeople don't listen,” he adds.
