Bangalore yet to pick up speed in waste segregation

On the second day of their initiative to make Bangaloreans segregate garbage at the source, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) managed to achieve 15 per cent success in most areas.

 This, after the Mayor and the Commissioner took to the streets to generate awareness through door-to-door campaigns and rallies.

 While BBMP officials claims that Yelahanka and Malleshwaram were the most honest wards in adopting the new rule and implementing it, DG Halli and Tannery Road from the Pulikeshi Nagar constituency were rated as the areas that did not comply with the new rule completely.

 “Progress achieved on the second day of the segregation of waste generated has been encouraging compared to the first day by and large in all the zones of the BBMP.

 “There has been good response from all the zones and a test check was conducted at the Yelahanka zone that stands ahead of all the zones in segregation of waste,” said BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel.

 BBMP Conducts Ground Check at Yelahanka

The Yelahanka zone, comprising of 11 wards, had about 116 officials of different cadres headed by the joint commissioner, who conducted a ground check of the collection of segregated waste from the area.

 “The initiative generated 35 tonnes of wet waste.

 This will now be given to farmers at the rate of `5,000.

 We generated 500 kg of dry waste and 55 kg of biomedical waste.

 This will now be given to Ramky, a garbage contractor, who will dispose of the waste scientifically,” Goel added.

 The BBMP also lauded farmers from the area for coming ahead and buying the wet waste
