BANGALORE: Chairperson of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s Standing Committee on Markets Roopa Ramesh has threatened to file a defamation suit against a trader in K R Market for making some “baseless allegations” against her in connection with the allotment of shops in K R Market.

Trader Anil Kumar has alleged that she was responsible for providing the passage used as ventilators in upper basement in the Market to shops and also taking a commission of Rs 40 lakh to process the possession certificate to own shops without inviting tenders.

Clarifying her stand about trader Kumar’s charges, Roopa said, “The allegations are all baseless. The passage in the basement of the Market was given to shops at the behest of the BBMP following an order from the Urban Development Department. I will file a defamation suit as I have no role in this issue.”

However, Anil Kumar maintained, “Bylaws have been violated. The shop has been given to T Ramakrishna who works at Vikasa Soudha. We protested against this move earlier and my father Ramanna filed a case against the BBMP. The High Court ordered to maintain status quo in the case. In spite of this, the passages meant to be ventilators have been converted into shops and rented out. The Standing Committee Chairperson should own the responsibility because the government was misled on the issue and therefore, the Urban Development Department gave a clearance for setting up shops.”
