BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has proposed to provide library facilities to all the Palike high schools and colleges.

Presently, the Palike runs 178 primary and secondary schools, 38 high schools, 13 pre-university colleges and one degree college. As an initiative to upgrade these educational institutions, Palike has drawn the proposal to start libraries.

K Ramesh Raju, chairperson, Standing Committee (Health), said libraries will be started at schools where there is adequate space. “As many as 36 high schools and 17 colleges including one degree college will have library facilities,” he said. Though library will be started only in a few institutions now, provisions will be made to start the facility at all Palike educational institutions soon, Raju said.

He added that Standing Committee (Education) had passed the resolution and the Commissioner had also approved it.

“After the completion of furniture works, books will be procured. Although our term ends in the last week of April, the Standing Committee will continue the project, which costs `1.5 crore,”he said.

Speaking to Express, one of the committee members said they were planning to request the Kannada Book Authority to provide books. “We will also ask private donors to contribute books,” the member said.
