BANGALORE: Taking a cue from Mysore Zoo, where CCTV cameras were installed at vantage positions to monitor the movement of people and animals, the Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) too will install at least six CCTV cameras at important spots in the zoo.

The park is spread across 2,600 hectares.

Besides, it houses a dozen exotic lions and around 40 tigers.

To ensure the safety of these endangered species, the park authorities are planning to have fool-proof security.

Sources said despite the 24x7 security system, intruders can gain entry to the zoo.

“We want to provide complete safety to the animals, hence, we will install CCTV cameras at the park,” said Dr R Raju, Executive Director, Bannerghatta Biological Park.

The project is still in the initial process and the total cost of the project is being estimated.

Sources said a few firms had ventured to take up the project.

The proposal has to be cleared by the of Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK).

Cameras are likely to be installed near important areas like lion safari, tiger safari and other areas, where people’s movement is more.

In the second phase, the CCTV cameras will be installed at all the animal enclosures and office.

Dr Raju said BBP has 46 tigers and this needs tightened security.

Also, during the absence of security guards on the premises, the CCTV cameras would help monitor the park, he added.

A full-fledged monitoring room is also required to monitor the movement of people and animals.

“Though, no budgetary provision has been made, installing CCTV cameras is a must,” he said.
