BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in association with United Way Bengaluru and Ingersoll Rand, has initiated ‘Lake-a-thon’ under ‘Wake the Lake’ campaign to restore and rejuvenate Uttarahalli Lake.

Lake-a-thon was flagged off on Saturday by environmentalist Dr A N Yellappa Reddy. Speaking to Express, Manish, general manager, United Way Bengaluru, said, more than 200 people participated at the event.  

They walked around the lake to create awareness among locals. Manish said they had an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BBMP to maintain the lake for the next five years.

While BBMP has already completed the fencing work across the lake, Ingersoll Rand will provide financial assistance of `10 lakh for one year period.

“We will maintain the lake and appoint a security guard,” he said.

 A release from United Way Bengaluru said, they were planning to support restoration of 11 lakes in the city. The average cost of maintaining a lake is about `18 lakh.

The release also stated that the  Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has undertaken the first part of lake rejuvenation, which includes removing encroachments, fencing lakes, diverting sewage water and installing sewage treatment plants.
