BANGALORE: Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre has introduced cochlear implant centre in the Department of Rehabilitation.

Kalpaja Dalavoi, director, Cochlear Implant Centre, said, “Hearing impairment is not a disability any more. With recent advances in the field of Medicine, there are treatment facilities for individuals with hearing impairment. Cochlear implant is  one among the many options and is suggested when hearing aid fails to perform. Arrival of high-end diagnostic equipment for early identification of hearing lossfacilitates the early intervention and management of hearing loss.”

During a guest lecture Prof J M Hans, pioneer for minimum surgical intervention- veria technique of cochlear implant surgery in India said that the process however does not end with surgery. Auditory rehabilitation is essential for those who have undergone cochlear implant surgery.

What is cochlear implant Cochlear implant is a small artificial hearing device which is designed to produce hearing sensation by electrical stimulation of nerves inside the inner ear. Cochlear implant facilitates development of listening skills.
