BANGALORE: In this financial year (2011-12),Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Standing Committee Chairman (Taxation and Finance) Manjunath, who presented the “mega budget”, had announced distribution of free hygiene medical kits to all girls studying in BBMP schools and colleges. They had even boasted that the scheme will be first of its kind in the entire country. It has been almost six months since they announced the budget, nothing has been done.

According to Ramesh Raju, BBMP Standing Committee Chairman (Education) they are giving medical kits, but not to individual students. A senior official from BBMP said that this year, though budget amount presented exceeded Rs 9,500 crore, Education Department got just Rs 44 crore. “Out of this Rs 28 crore is for paying salaries to teachers .Many of the schools need basic facilities like toilets and class rooms. We need to take up these issues than providing medical kits,” he added.

Meanwhile, BBMP is insistent on the project, in which they plan to install sanitary napkin vending machines in all the BBMP schools and colleges.
