BANGALORE: Of late, the State Legislature has failed to function effectively, bemoaned K G Bopaiah, Speaker of Legislative Assembly here recently.

He was speaking at the valedictory programme of the ‘State Level Youth Parliament Competition 2011-12’ here at the Secretariat Club on Friday. A number of students from across State participated in the competition.

The Assembly Speaker said, “For the administrative system to function effectively, the Legislature must perform effectively. But in the recent past, the Legislature has failed to do so.”

Bopaiah also said that the failure of the Legislature to function properly will be reflected on the system and urged that there was a need to create more awareness about the functioning of Parliament among the school children and youths.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of the State Legislative Council D H Shankar Murthy said, “If democracy has to stand tall,  students and youth population must be made aware of how a government is formed, how they function, and the pillars of democracy. The government must rope in teachers for    this task.”

Shankar Murthy said schools must organise mock youth parliament every month. He also expressed his grief that the good work done at the Parliament is overshadowed by the fights which get highlighted.

BWSSB, Urban Development and Law and Parlimentary Affairs Minister S Suresh Kumar,  MLC Go Madhusudhan and MLA Dayanand were present.

Vatsala from Government High School, Shimoga, Anurag from S N V School, Udupi and Shivaprasad Bhat, Pragati Vidyalaya won the first three places respectively in the competition.
