Samashti, a Kannada theatre troupe will stage a play titled Naayee Kathe written by Dr Chandrashekar Kambar and directed by Ravindra Poojary at Rangashankara at 7.30 pm on January 24.

About the play

Naayee Kathe is a music-based North Karnataka dialect drama written by Dr Chandrashekhar Kambar. Here, the writer becomes the voice of characters and demonstrates the dilemma of choosing between pure love and materialistic attitude by portraying the life of the Dombi Daasa nomadic community. The present day conflicts between the common man’s aspirations and realities, Role of money and muscle power, Concept and Value of Freedom in the present day context, Struggle for existence, Love, etc with sharp and witty dialogues manage to keep the audience engrossed.

‘Somanna’ who is intoxicated with power, ‘Naayeemaga’ who refuses to see himself as a human being,  ‘Shaari’ who hangs on to her principles against all odds, ‘Savanthri’ and ‘Daasa’ two materialistic beasts are the prominent characters in the play.

About the writer

Chandrashekhara Kambara is a prominent poet, playwright, folklorist, film director in Kannada. He is known for his effective usage of North Karnataka dialect of Kannada language in his plays and poems.  Kambar has been conferred with many prestigious awards including Padma Shri, Kabir Samman, Kalidas Samman, Pampa award, Kannada Saahithya Academy Award, etc., He was the founder Vice Chancellor of Kannada University and also served as Member of Legislative Council, Director National School of Drama, Director Karnataka Naataka Academy. Some of his prominent plays are Jokumaraswamy, Harakeya Kuri, Sambha Shiva Prahasana, Siri Sampige, Tukrana Kanasu and Mahaa Maaye. Some of his noted literary works are Singaravva Mattu Aramane, Sangya Baalya, Lakshapati Raajana Kathe, Karimaaye, GK Maasthra Pranaya Prasanga, Huliya neralu, Bepputakkadi Bole Shankara, etc.

About the director

Ravindra Poojari, a product of Abhinaya Taranga’s Drama School, is one of the founding members of Samasthi. He has carved a niche for himself as a director and light technician. Some of the well known plays directed by him which have won many state level awards include Goode Kanda Kathe, Ashadada Ondu Dina, SambaShiva Prahasana, Mrichakatika, Haddu Meerida Haadi, Alegalalli Rajahamsagalu.

About  the team

Samasthi, initiated in the year 2000, is the team has dedicated themselves to the Kannada theatre. The main objective of the troupe is to identify aspiring artists, train them in all aspects of theatre and initiate them to the main stream of Kannada Theatre. To achieve its objectives Samashti has organised many free theatre camps so far. It has had run a Theatre School for three years under the title Sunday School of Drama’ specially designed for working people. So far Samashti has produced Ashadada Ondu Dina, SambaShiva Prahasana, Mrichakatika, Haddu Meerida Haadi, Alegalalli Rajahamsagalu, Harinabhisarana, Kathana, Preethi, Miss Sadarame, Kathe Helathivi, Avanthara and Shandilya Prahasana.
