Motley Production will present Katha Collage, a p l a y b y Naseeruddin Shah in aid of Concern India Foundation at Good Shepherd Auditorium, Residency Road at 7.30 pm on March 8.

Katha Collage is a compilation of three classic tales Bade Bhai Saab (Elder brother) and Shatranj Ke Khiladi (The chess players) by Munshi Premchand and Sankraman (The circle of life) by Kamtanath.

The play boasts of stellar performances by Naseeruddin Shah, Vivan Shah, Rakesh Chaturvedi, Seema Pawaha and Manoj Pahwa.

About the plays:

Bade Bhai Sahab ( Elder Brother) by Munshi Premchand is the story of two brothers, narrated in the first person by the younger brother.

The story compares and contrasts the two siblings, of whom the younger one is carefree, irresponsible but extremely brilliant, a trait he is blissfully unaware of.

The tale of the two brothers is a symbolic study of two approaches to life, two mindsets, the contrast of tradition and modernity and that of natural brilliance and natural mediocrity.

No sides are taken by the writer in the hilarious study of two people who should be alike in every way but are obviously touched by different stars.

Shatranj ke Khiladi ( The Chess Players) by Munshi Premchand which we have also seen as a film made by Satyajit Ray, is a satire about two indulgent feudal lords (Mirza and Meer) obsessed with the game of chess.

Set in the days before the 1857 Mutiny, the tale is about a misguided sense of pride and a lackadaisical approach to the nation of these chess players who continue their game sessions even when they know the enemy has set their kingdom, Awadh, ablaze.

Sankraman (The Circle of Life ) by Kamtanath.

Most of us hitting middle age are often startled by memory flashes of our own parents and by how similar to them we have unconsciously began to sound, look or behave.

The realisation that we could not possibly have been any other way is sometimes bitter and always inevitable.

The writer has perceptively captured this remorselessness circle of life in which all of us are caught.

These three pungent, straight from the heart points of view of man, his wife and their son are set in middle class home of Uttar Pradesh, but are representative of parents and progeny anywhere.
